More than a Business

Our client had successfully grown his business, but his personal wealth was not well diversified and was largely tied to the business itself.

Like many business owners, most of his time, energy and financial focus had gone into growing the company. The business had become both his greatest asset and, unintentionally, his retirement plan. On paper, he was successful. But the vast majority of his wealth was tied up in the business. His retirement plans, financial independence and future lifestyle all depended on the continued success and eventual value of a single asset. Outside of the business, he had relatively little in the way of diversified personal wealth.

There was another issue.

His family depended heavily on him financially. If he became seriously ill or died unexpectedly, both his family and the business could face significant challenges. Despite the value he was creating, important protection planning had never been fully addressed.

He wasn't short of wealth. He was short of financial resilience.

Our Approach

Rather than starting with products, we started with questions.

What would happen if the business was sold tomorrow?

What would happen if illness prevented him from working?

How much wealth needed to sit outside the business?

How much was enough?

Using detailed cashflow modelling, we brought together his business interests, pensions, personal assets and long-term objectives into a single financial plan. For the first time, he could clearly see how dependent his future was on one asset and, more importantly, what he could do about it. The result was clarity, confidence and a roadmap for the future.

What We Did

The objective wasn't to reduce ambition. The objective was to reduce dependency.

Working together, we built a strategy designed to strengthen both his personal finances and his family's long-term security whilst continuing to support the growth of the business.

This included:
  • Implementing tax-efficient protection planning, including Relevant Life Cover and Executive Income Protection, to protect both his family and the business.
  • Increasing pension contributions using available allowances and carry-forward opportunities from the previous 3 years unused allowances to extract profits tax-efficiently and build long-term personal wealth.
  • Building assets outside the business to reduce concentration risk.
  • Establishing a diversified investment strategy aligned to his long-term goals.
  • Using cashflow modelling to identify the actions most likely to improve his long-term financial position.
  • Creating a framework for retirement and future succession planning.
A key part of the advice was addressing a significant protection gap.

The client's family was heavily dependent on his ability to continue generating income. To address this, we implemented a tax-efficient Relevant Life policy through the business, providing meaningful financial protection for his family should the worst happen. We also established Executive Income Protection to help protect against the financial impact of long-term illness or injury.

The Outcome

The business remained his most valuable asset. But it was no longer his only plan. He was building meaningful wealth outside the company through pensions and investments. His long-term financial independence became less reliant on a future business sale. Most importantly, his family was no longer exposed to the same level of financial vulnerability. The Relevant Life policy provided reassurance that, if the worst happened, his family would receive meaningful financial support, whilst Executive Income Protection helped protect against the loss of earning capacity through illness or injury.

The conversation changed from:

"How do I grow the business?"

to:

"How do I ensure everything I've built ultimately benefits the people I care about most?"

Why This Matters

Many business owners spend decades building successful companies.  In the process, their income, retirement plans and family security become increasingly dependent on the business itself.

At Modus Wealth Management, we help clients build personal wealth alongside business wealth, creating financial independence that isn't reliant on a future sale or a single asset.  Because true financial security isn't just about building a successful business.  It's about ensuring everything you've built ultimately benefits the people you care about most.

The value of your pension will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up.  You may get back less than you invested.
