The Next Chapter

Our clients had spent decades building a successful business.

Like many business owners, most of their wealth was tied up in the company they had worked so hard to build. Years of hard work had culminated in a successful sale, creating significant wealth and opening-up new possibilities.

But the sale itself wasn't the real challenge.

They knew how to build a business, and had good advisers leading the sale process.

They weren't so sure how to turn the proceeds into a lifetime of financial security.

Questions quickly emerged:

  • Could they afford to retire?
  • How much could they safely spend?
  • How should the proceeds be invested?
  • Could they help their children financially?
  • What role would work play in the next chapter of their lives?

Most importantly:

Had they created enough to give themselves genuine freedom of choice?

Our Approach

Before discussing investments, we wanted to understand what they were trying to achieve. Retirement wasn't about doing nothing. They wanted more time for travel, family and personal interests, whilst keeping the flexibility to undertake occasional consultancy and non-executive roles if opportunities arose. Using detailed cashflow modelling, we brought together their sale proceeds, pensions, existing assets and future spending plans into a clear financial roadmap.  This allowed us to test different scenarios and answer the questions that mattered most:

  • How much could they spend without compromising their future security?
  • How much should remain invested?
  • What level of investment risk was appropriate?
  • What could they afford to gift to family?
  • What legacy were they likely to leave behind?

The goal wasn't simply to maximise wealth. It was to understand how their wealth could support the life they wanted to live.

What We Did

Using the financial plan as our foundation, we built a strategy designed to convert business wealth into long-term financial independence.

This included:

  • Creating a diversified investment portfolio rather than leaving substantial sale proceeds in cash deposits.
  • Structuring assets across pensions, ISAs and tax-efficient investment wrappers.
  • Designing a sustainable retirement income strategy capable of supporting their desired lifestyle.
  • Creating a framework for future gifts to children and longer-term legacy planning.
  • Establishing an ongoing review process to ensure the plan continues to evolve alongside their circumstances.

Every recommendation was linked back to the cashflow model. This ensured decisions were based on their goals, values and long-term objectives rather than speculation or guesswork.

The Outcome

The outcome wasn't simply an investment portfolio.

It was clarity. The cashflow modelling demonstrated that they could comfortably support the lifestyle they wanted, including extensive travel, helping their children financially and enjoying more freedom without compromising their long-term financial security.  We created a diversified and tax-efficient investment strategy designed to provide sustainable income alongside long-term growth, helping transform business wealth into personal financial independence,

Most importantly, work became a choice. Rather than feeling they needed to continue working, they had the confidence to pursue occasional consultancy and non-executive opportunities because they enjoyed them, not because they relied on the income.

The conversation shifted from:

"How much is the business worth?" to: "What do we want life to look like now?"

Why This Matters

Many business owners spend years planning how to sell their business. Far fewer spend time planning what happens after the sale. At Modus Wealth Management, we help clients turn business wealth into personal freedom through clear, evidence-based financial planning. Because a successful exit isn't simply about the value achieved. It's about having the confidence to use that wealth well. To spend more time with family. To pursue new opportunities. To enjoy the experiences that matter most. And to know that work is something you choose to do, not something you have to do.

The value of your investments will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up.  You may get back less than you invested.
